Editorial Policy

Effective date: July 27, 2026Last updated: July 27, 2026

HomeCostBrief publishes source-backed, people-first guidance for U.S. homeowners, homebuyers and small rental-property owners. This policy explains how editorial decisions are made.

Important: This page describes the site’s intended and current practices but is not a substitute for advice from a qualified lawyer or privacy professional for a specific business or jurisdiction.

Editorial mission and audience

Content should answer a real planning question clearly, explain uncertainty and help readers prepare for a qualified professional conversation. HomeCostBrief avoids fake urgency, unsupported certainty, copied summaries, hidden commercial pressure and claims of personal experience that did not occur.

Coverage and limitations

The site covers ownership costs, mortgage and closing concepts, maintenance planning, insurance terminology, landlord expenses, bookkeeping basics and browser-based calculators. It does not publish individualized advice or determine eligibility, coverage, liability, tax treatment or property condition.

Source hierarchy

Research prioritizes:

  1. U.S. government agencies, regulators, statutes, official forms and public guidance;
  2. state or local authorities when geography matters;
  3. recognized standards organizations and primary industry documentation;
  4. reputable research, professional associations and clearly identified secondary sources.

Commercial sources may be used for context but should not be the sole support for high-impact claims when stronger primary material is available.

Evidence, dates and geography

Claims should identify the relevant geography, data year, assumptions and limitations. Publication and updated dates must reflect real editorial work. An updated date should not be changed merely to make an article appear fresh.

Cost ranges and calculations

Cost figures must distinguish national orientation from local quotes. Articles should explain what the range includes, what can change it and whether taxes, permits, disposal, access, emergency service or optional upgrades are excluded.

Calculator formulas and defaults are checked against the stated methodology. Outputs must be described as planning estimates rather than guaranteed outcomes.

High-impact topics

Mortgage, insurance, tax, legal, electrical, structural, mold, asbestos, lead, flood and other safety-sensitive topics require careful sourcing, explicit limitations and referral to qualified professionals or official authorities where appropriate.

Authorship and accountability

HomeCostBrief identifies its editorial team and provides contact and correction channels. Organization-level authorship does not remove responsibility for verifying the page, sources, calculations and update history.

AI-assisted workflow

AI tools may assist with topic research, outlines, organization, drafting, summarization, code or editing. AI output is not treated as a source. Human review is required for factual claims, citations, formulas, links, disclaimers and the final publication decision.

HomeCostBrief should not publish fabricated quotes, invented statistics, nonexistent sources or synthetic “personal experiences.”

Fact-checking and quality review

Before publication, the workflow should check title and search intent, factual claims, source relevance, internal links, calculations, dates, metadata, structured data, image descriptions, mobile readability and advertising separation.

Reviews, comparisons and rankings

If product or service comparisons are published, the page should explain the criteria, data source, material commercial relationships and whether products were personally tested. Rankings must not be sold or changed solely because a company pays more.

Advertising independence

Display advertising may support the site, but advertisers do not approve articles, choose conclusions, alter calculators or receive favorable treatment. Ads are labeled “Advertisement” and kept visually separate from navigation, forms and editorial recommendations.

Affiliate and sponsored relationships

Material connections are disclosed clearly and near the relevant recommendation. Sponsored content, if accepted, must be labeled at the beginning and must not imitate independent editorial coverage. Compensated links use appropriate link attributes.

Updates and maintenance

Pages are reviewed when official guidance changes, a source becomes unavailable, a calculator changes, a material correction is required or the content no longer answers the search intent accurately. Review frequency varies by topic risk and volatility.

Corrections and reader feedback

Material errors are corrected promptly after verification. A visible note may be added when the correction changes the meaning, recommendation framework or calculation. Minor grammar and formatting fixes may be made without a notice. See the Corrections Policy.
